Does anyone have realistic advice on how to open a tattoo shop?

just a dream ive had for a long time, just curious of any and all things i would need to achieve this goal.Does anyone have realistic advice on how to open a tattoo shop?
I have seen my parents open several businesses and I have specialized in helping new owners open their dream businesses. I would say that the two most important things to opening a business are location and policy.

Location- this includes advertising. Basically, you want to put your self in a place that when people think of tatoos or piercings they come to your shop. Also, give ';coupons'; to companies around you to hand out to their customers, along with a discount for those people (to reward them for bringing you business).

Policy- You want to be organized and have procedures set out. Also, do not start out without a manager, and do not set out with intentions of promoting from within. Usually, with the intitial group of workers, jealousy and unhealthy competition can occur and it's just not good. It is best to hire in a manager and let them know that to start the pay might not be as high as a manager normally would get, but that as the business grows, they will be rewarded. This gives them reason to work hard and try to get more business. Also, make sure you have forms for everything- tattoo design forms, price/reciept forms, join our newsletter forms, customer complaint/praise forms, etcDoes anyone have realistic advice on how to open a tattoo shop?
You would need experience of running a business and know something about tattooing first.

Work or intern at a shop to understand the responsibility and flow of a tat business.

Purchase a shop that is already established. Try to buy everything already in it including the autoclaves and guns.

Change the name if you want.

Finish paying it off, and buy another one.
1. you need a building location, figure easy, cheap way to go is a simple small strip mall location. so figure around $600 a month rent and normally a 3 year lease contract.

2. utilities like phone, internet, gas/electric, water, trash removal and any other small fee's. figure something like $300 a month at least.

3. yearly license fee's, health code checks, up date in training. figure on average $100 a month.

4. sign for the building, wow these can range from $10k to $100k and up.

5. then you need business cards, flyers, maybe uniform shirts, aprons, towels, etc. so another easy $100 a month or about $2000 to first start it all.

6. you will need at least 4-6 months of bills, rent and payroll in the bank to ensure you make it. so that's $600 rent, $300 utilities, $200 misc, then if ONLY you working, figure you will want at least $500 a week plus taxes and other legal items so that's more like $750. so that's $4100 per month x 6 months or $25k.

7. figure for each employee working, to include taxes and all it is really 1.25% of what you pay them.

8. so right now, just to open the doors you are easily in the $35k range and you have yet to buy a chair, table, needle, sterilization machine, nothing else. so with all that, even used, figure right off $100k.

9. not to mention any up front training you need since this is a health item and effects the skin an such. meaning FDA among other groups.

10. smart way..... skip the building, rig it all up into a small toolbox system that can be carried. offer mobile service, to their homes, to their offices, where ever. as a building is 90% of your expense, so cut it out.

I say this as I do small paint repair work on high line cars. I had a shop, I had all that junk and expense. And I worked like a dog to pay for it all. Then I got smart, removed it all, and shrunk it all down to fit into just a Chevy Blazer's back end, with compressor and all.

End result, 80% of my time back to me, 83% of my cash back to me, 97% of my stress removed and 90% of the BS removed. Yet I still work, own a company and make the same if not more while working so so so much less.

KISS - keep it simple stupid
